Executive Functioning Support That Actually Works

Executive function is the difference between knowing what to do and doing it. It is teachable at every age.

    External scaffolds first

Calendars, lists, alarms, and visual timers should be installed before behavioral expectations rise. Internalization comes later.

    If-then planning

Pre-deciding 'if X happens, then I will do Y' reduces in-the-moment cognitive load and dramatically increases follow-through.

    Tiny goals + immediate feedback

EF circuits learn from frequent small wins. Break tasks until each step takes <10 minutes and feels achievable.

    Practical tips

    • Same time, same place, same way — routine externalizes EF.
    • End every day with a 2-minute reset for tomorrow.
    • Reward systems work — when they reward effort, not perfection.
